Celebrating 150 Years of Medical Education in Alabama1959-2009
“Graduates of four different programs make up the rolls of the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association. … Considered are those receiving M.D. degrees at the medical school while it was in Mobile (1859-1920); those completing the two-year pre-clinical curriculum in the School of Medicine at Tuscaloosa (1920-1945); those receiving M.D. degrees from the Birmingham Medical College (1895-1915) and later given alumni status by the University of Alabama; and finally those awarded M.D. degrees from the four-year program in Birmingham, known as the Medical College of Alabama (1945-1969) and the University of Alabama School of Medicine from 1969 to the present.”

MONTHLY MILESTONES
The following facts are being published throughout this celebraatory year in the hospital/campus periodical UAB Synopsis. UAB Archives Director and assistant professor at the Lister Hill Library, Timothy Pennycuff is contributing these monthly facts. Mr. Pennycuff is scheduled to present his lecture "A Medical Shool on the Move: Medical Education in Alabama, 1859-2009," during the Scientific Program at Alumni Weekend on Saturday morning, February 28, 2009.
March Milestones

March 2003 - A new facility was opened as the primary clinical and academic space for the University of Alabama School of Medicine Huntsville Program.

March 3, 1964 - Cardiologist and Professor Tinsley R. Harrison, MD, delivered the medical center's first Distinguished Faculty Lecture, "Witches and Doctors."

March 4, 1907 - The Alabama Legislature amended the charter of the Medical College of Alabama to incorporate it as an administrative unit of the University of Alabama. Two days later the independent governing board was dissolved and the UA Board of Trustees gained control over the medical school.

March 7, 1860 - After a 1-year term, the first class of 15 students graduated from the Medical College of Alabama. Samuel Watson Acton from Trussville received the first degree.
February Milestones

February 16, 1944 - The Governor's Building Commission selected Birmingham as the location of the 4-year medical school of the University of Alabama

February 1950 - Construction began on a basic sciences building for the medical and dental schools

February 2, 1952 - Ann Jane Reid became the first woman to receive a graduate degree (in biochemistry) awarded through the Medical Center

February 2, 1958 - The Lawrence Reynold Library was dedicated

February 26, 1977 - Edwin G. Waldrop, MD, a member of the Class of 1946, received the first Distinguished Alumnus Award presented by the Medical Alumni Association
January Milestones

January 1860 - Alabama Act 255 granted a charter for the Medical College of Alabama, which had opened in Mobile the previous fall.

January 1920 - Daniel T. McCall, Sr, MD, became the medical school's acting dean.

January 1977 - The Family Practice Center in Selma was dedicated.

January 1993 - Harold J. Fallon, MD, became dean of the medical school.
