Mentor Program

Volunteer to Mentor a Medical Student

As alumni of the School of Medicine, each of us are in a unique position to help current medical students; we can become mentors. No one can understand the current pressures and future concerns of medical students better than those of us who have walked the path before them. Whether you are a recent graduate who has fresh experience with medical school and residency, or a more experienced physician who can give insight into what the future may hold, you can help encourage and advise a young physician-in-training.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please follow this link to submit a form online. Or call our office at 205-325-3092. The Medical Alumni Office will connect interested medical students with volunteers.

If you are a student interested in being connected with a mentor, follow this link to submit your information.

Here are comments from some of the students who are currently seeking a mentor. If you feel you are particularly suited to mentor one of these students, please include their number in the comments section of your form. These are not the only students seeking mentors; so please sign up, even if you don't see a match below!

1 - Dermatopathology - "I am an MD/PhD student at UAB and am currently interested in dermatopathology. I would be interested in having a mentor that has insight into clinical practice as well as academic and research aspects of this specialty."

2 - Immunology - "I am an MD/PhD student and I am interested in researching and practicing in the field of immunology but I am undecided as to what clinical specialty will be most appropriate for me. I have thought about gastroenterology, infectious disease, dermatology and allergy and immunology, among others."

3 - OB/Gyn - "I have a passion for women's health and medical care for the underserved/uninsured. I run, cycle hike and am an avid reader. Finally, I'm applying to residency right now and would appreciate any advice I can get."

4 - Psychiatry - "I'd love to talk to anyone with experience in psychiatry, but particularly doctors who have trained or have worked outside of Alabama as that is most likely where I will end up training and it's always nice to hear firsthand about other places. I'd also love to speak with a woman psychiatrist or anyone who has juggled family and job concerns and has any advice on this matter for young physicians."

5 - Neurology, Pediatric Neurology, Neuropathology - "I am an MSTP student. I would be particularly interested in being matched with an MD/PhD alum or an MD alum who does research (either clinical or bench research)."

6 - Internal Medicine, Family Practice - "Leaning toward Internal Medicine or Family Practice. Also an attorney and 2nd Lt. in the Army National Guard."

7 - Pediatrics - "I would be really interested in having a female alumni mentor, so I can learn more about how she manages family and her workload."

8 - Child Neurology - "I would really love more experience in pediatric neurology than what is offered on the 3rd year rotation in order to see if I am really interested in it. I would love to shadow someone here in Huntsville whenever possible."

9 - OB/Gyn - "I am especially interested in learning more about reproductive endocrinology and infertility and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery."

10 - Emergency Medicine - "I think I may be interested in starting a career in EM. However, every emergency physician I've met is in academics. It would be great to be able to talk to someone about community/private emergency medicine, so that I can make an informed decision before entering the field."

11 - Medical Toxicology, Environmental and Occupational Medicine, Internal Medicine - "I have an MPH in Environmental Health Sciences with a strong interest in chemical contamination and human health (particularly heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants). I would like to continue working within the field of public health while practicing as a physician. I am very interested in primary care and would really like to learn more about the field of medical toxicology."

12 - General Surgery - "I would like to try a residency program outside the Southeast. I am looking into the Northeast, Chicago area, Oregon Health Sciences University, Washington state, and California. I would love to be paired with an alum who may have trained or visited schools in these regions.
