Record breaking attendance of over 500, class reunions for 15 groups of medical school graduates, and special guest speakers Alabama Senate President Pro Tem Rodger Smitherman, and U.S. Rep. Artur Davis highlighted the 36th annual Medical Alumni Weekend. Hosted by The University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association on Feb. 27-28, the event is an annual "homecoming" for the medical school alumni featuring continuing education programs, lectures, the grand reception and reunion events.
Theodis Buggs, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, was installed as President after serving a two year term as President Elect of the group. He received the gavel from outgoing President Betty Ruth Speir, M.D., an ob/gyn from Point Clear. Other officers of the Medical Alumni Association are Albert Tully, M.D., Birmingham, past president; Gerhard Boehm, M.D., Mobile, president elect; and Alan Dimick, M.D., Birmingham, treasurer. An additional 25 physicians serve on the Board of Directors.
The year 2009 marks the 150th year of medical education in the state of Alabama, and the UAMAA kicked off the celebration in grand style. Alabama Senator Rodger Smitherman, Speaker Pro Tem, delivered the Constance and James A. Pittman Lecture at the annual Awards Luncheon, and presented a resolution from the Alabama Senate commemorating the occasion. Click here to read the text of the Senate Resolution. U.S. Rep. Artur Davis addressed the black alumni group at their dinner on Saturday night. Davis is also a candidate for governor of Alabama.
The Annual Luncheon also included presentation of the Distinguished Alumnus and Hettie Terry Community Service Awards. Click here to read biographies of this year's award winners and speakers.
The UAMAA headquarters at 811 South 20th Street was the site on Friday of the Board of Directors and Class Chairs luncheon, followed by the Reynolds Lecture at the historical Reynolds Library. Other events followed on Saturday at the Birmingham Marriott.
