The Jimmy W. Beard Memorial Scholarship

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,

We are deeply saddened at the death of our Executive Director Emeritus, Jimmy W. Beard. Any of you who graduated in the last 30+ years probably knew him, along with many of us who finished school before that time. We experienced his deep devotion to medical students, the doctors we have become, and our Alumni Association.

As a memorial and a tribute to Jimmy, the Medical Alumni Association has established the Jimmy W. Beard Memorial Scholarship, to provide a scholarship (tuition and expenses) for a deserving student to the University of Alabama School of Medicine. (The School has some partial scholarships, but this will be the first to provide the full cost of a year of medical school.)

In order to generate that level of income, our goal for the Scholarship Fund Endowment will be $600,000. This will take some time to achieve, but once it's in place, the Scholarship will always be here to remind us and those who follow us of Jimmy and his love of medical students.
Think about it -- if 600 of us make a $1,000 gift or pledge, we will make our goal. We'll be putting a plaque in the Medical Alumni Building engraved with the names of those who give $1,000 or more to the Scholarship Fund. It doesn't have to be done at once. You can pledge $100 a month, or any way that will fit your budget. If you're just getting established in practice, remember that any gift you can make will help us toward our goal.
